Otway Ranges, Victoria, Australia

The vast expanse and unforgiving arid climate of the Outback may be the first thing that comes to mind with the words "Australian wilderness," but in the Otway Ranges, Victoria, Australia nothing could be further from the truth. Located along the southern coast of Victoria, this region is one of the wettest parts of the entire continent.

Thanks to moist ocean winds and the coastal mountains that catch them the Otway Ranges, Victoria, Australia are covered with lush temperate rainforests. The area was the site of heavy logging in previous eras but extensive virgin areas abound, especially within the boundaries of Great Otway National Park. This large park, which was created in 2004 when a number of smaller parks were combined, runs along the coast and offers easy access to both mountains and pristine beaches. Dense stands of gum, ash and beech trees provide homes to forest animals. The Otway Ranges, Victoria, Australia is very popular with naturalists and is one of the best places in Victoria to see the iconic Koala in its natural habitat..

Great Otway National Park has numerous camping areas but bear in mind that this is still a rather remote area. Winter rains can occasionally put a damper on transportation, so visitors would be wise to check conditions before finalizing their plans. It's well worth it though, because when a mountain range combines with heavy coastal rainfall it almost always makes for stunning natural vistas. Don't miss seeing one of the Otway Ranges' many waterfalls like Triplet Falls or the Cora Lynn Cascades. Some are easily reached from a nearby road while others require a more strenuous hike. The Great Ocean Walk stretches for 90 hiker-friendly kilometres from Port Apollo to Glenample Homestead, near the famous 12 Apostles.
